Concrete Basics
Concrete has long been associated with durability. It is a hard, strong construction material composed of Portland cement, sand, gravel, (also called aggregate), and water. This cement is created by grinding calcined limestone and clay to a fine powder, which can then be mixed with water and poured to set as a solid mass, or can be further combined with other materials to make concrete. Portland cement is the primary substance of concrete, offering greater strength as its proportion is increased within the mixture.
Concrete has been used throughout the ages for a wide variety of building purposes (see History of Concrete). In recent years, many technological advances have been made in the processes by which cementitious materials can be used for both interior and exterior purposes. The result? Concrete can now be both beautiful and durable!
A variety of methods and products enable concrete craftsmen to create a wide range of colors and textures when pouring new concrete. Likewise, old, dreary-gray slabs can be enhanced to look like marble, stone, slate, cobblestone, and a wide array of other masonries, or overlayed with your favorite flooring material.
